The Blavatnik School of Government seeks to improve, inform and support better public policy and government in every country of the world. The new home of the School of Government is prominently located between Woodstock Road and Walton Street, with Somerville College to the south and Green Templeton College to the north.
The Project
“We are here to improve government around the world,” says Ngaire Woods, dean of the Blavatnik School of Government, founded in 2010, which has just opened the doors of its £30m new building. She is sitting in its open “forum”, at the bottom of a huge atrium that spirals up in swirling loops towards the sky, where experts in public policy and global governance look out from their glazed cubicles. “We wanted a building that would bring people together around a central heart and express the values of openness, transparency and collaboration.”
How Jade helped
Jade Solutions designed, installed and provided all the necessary CORNING Connectivity and Infrastructure Cabling to ensure a world class warranted AV infrastructure solution within building.The structured cabling solution consisted of a CORNING Category 6a shielded copper solution and OM3 fibre optic inter cabinet and specialised AV links.
At the core of all AV infrastructure is the Central Control room, which receives and controls AV feeds from all teaching spaces. These teaching spaces (lecture theatres and seminar rooms) are also equipped with individual language translation and control booths keeping in mind the international demographics of users (students, conference attendees etc.)
Creating broadcast-quality content is expected of a School of Excellence in public policy. Two Virtual Production Studios were also established to capture content including lectures, conferences, speaker series, presentations and presentation audio.
These studios are capable of mashing content for broadcast, similar to newsroom broadcasts, for which BlackMagic ATEM production switchers were installed (making BSG one of the very few education establishments to support the highly advanced equipment). Outdoor Broadcast points are also included in the infrastructure, for example, news channels broadcast vans can relay live content to their respective stations using the School’s own broadcast equipment rather than their own.
Furthermore, content can be broadcast or LiveStream; record lectures for students, and record lectures from one theatre for distribution to any part of the building. BSG is also one of the first University buildings to use 6G HD/SDI video cameras entirely throughout the building(infrastructure is 8K video capable for the future). Building-wide IPTV was also installed to stream BBC Parliament, besides news, digital signage and other live streaming content.
Jade delivered the IT solution infrastructure to a total of 17 separate lecture/meeting places, Jade worked closely the with AV/Oxford University staff and the Building Contractor’s project management teams to ensure we delivered on time and budget.
